Hospice care: who qualifies, what Medicare pays, and Medicare-certified hospices near you

Hospice is comfort care for a terminal illness. It can be provided at home, in assisted living or in a nursing home.

Quick answer

HomeCareFinder lists 6,608 Medicare-certified hospices from CMS Care Compare (August 2026 release) in every state and territory except Florida (coming January 1, 2027), ranked only by the CMS family caregiver survey star rating. 2,119 have a rating; 415 are rated 5 stars. Medicare Part A covers hospice for people whose hospice doctor and regular doctor certify a life expectancy of 6 months or less and who choose comfort care instead of treatment to cure the illness. You pay nothing for hospice care from a Medicare-approved hospice; a copay of up to $5 per prescription for symptom drugs and 5% for inpatient respite care may apply. Medicare doesn't pay room and board.

What the CMS hospice star rating means

The star rating on these pages is CMS's family caregiver survey rating, built from the CAHPS Hospice Survey that families answer after a patient's death (survey period 10/01/2023 – 09/30/2025). Many hospices have no star rating, usually because too few surveys came back; no rating is not a bad rating. Each listing also shows, when CMS publishes them, the share of caregivers who would definitely recommend the hospice and the Hospice Care Index score (0–10, from Medicare claims).
